Dschubba traces the brow of Scorpius, just above its curving head. The name, from the Arabic «al-jabhah», means precisely that: the forehead. A hot variable B-class star 491 light years away, it offered a surprise in the year 2000, when an unexpected outburst doubled its brightness and revealed a circumstellar disk of gas spinning swiftly around it.
Where it is and when to see it
Dschubba lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is May: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
