What is Epsilon Phoenicis

Epsilon Phoenicis is an orange giant at the far southern reach of the Phoenix, that modern constellation drawn by Dutch navigators of the sixteenth century as they charted the southern sky. At 144 light-years, its warm hue contrasts with the blue of nearby Achernar, marking one wing of the mythical bird that rises from its own ashes.

Where it is and when to see it

Epsilon Phoenicis lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is September, when it culminates around midnight.

From London it never rises above the horizon.
From New York it culminates about 4° above the horizon.
From Sydney it culminates about 78° above the horizon.

It can be seen from anywhere south of 44° N.
