What is Zeta 1 Librae
ζ¹ Librae belongs to the Scales, the old name for the Scorpion's claws that the Romans split into their own constellation. It is an orange giant 784 light-years away, of type K4 III, with a temperature of 4,140 K and around 400 solar luminosities. Its coppery, soft, ancient light comes from a multiple star whose fainter companions remain almost in shadow.
Where it is and when to see it
Zeta 1 Librae lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is May: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
