Gamma Circini is a visual binary and variable star, in one of the smallest and most retiring constellations of the southern sky, Lacaille's Compass. The primary is a hot blue-white subgiant; a yellow companion orbits beside it, splittable through a good telescope. An unequal pair of suns at 449 light-years, quietly close to the foot of Centaurus.
Where it is and when to see it
Gamma Circinus lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is May: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
