What is Nu 1 Lupi
Nu-1 Lupi drifts across the sky faster than most of its neighbours, an F-type subgiant 117 light-years away in the southern reaches of the Wolf. About two billion years old, with nearly 1.7 solar masses and metallicity above the Sun's, it emits a faint X-ray glow. Despite its modest brightness, its high proper motion turns it into a silent witness to the slow turning of the galaxy.
Where it is and when to see it
Nu 1 Lupi lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is May: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
