What is Phi 1 Lupi
Phi-1 Lupi is an orange giant of type K resting some 275 light-years away, in the silhouette of the southern Wolf. Its warm light, stretched across centuries, reaches Earth aged and serene, the calm glow of a star that has long left its main-sequence youth behind. To the naked eye it is one of the quiet embers outlining the Centaur's beast, stitched between Antares and the Southern Cross.
Where it is and when to see it
Phi 1 Lupi lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is May: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
