What is HIP 74707

A distant yellow-white beacon in the constellation Lupus, the wolf. Its light has been travelling for 1763 years: it left when Rome was tottering under its late emperors and Germanic peoples were already crossing the limes. An F-class, notably luminous star, larger and more energetic than the Sun, it reaches us as a pale whisper after a millennium of journey across the galactic arm.

Where it is and when to see it

HIP 74707 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is May, when it culminates around midnight.

From London it never rises above the horizon.
From New York it culminates about 8° above the horizon.
From Sydney it culminates about 82° above the horizon.

It can be seen from anywhere south of 49° N.
