In Lupus, the wolf constellation of the southern sky, it burns with the cutting blue of hot class B stars. The light observed set out 387 years ago: when it did, the Thirty Years' War was unfolding in central Europe and Descartes was publishing his «Discourse on the Method», opening a new era for philosophy. It is a young sun on the cosmic scale, far hotter and more energetic than our own, and its bluish brightness stands out in its corner of the southern sky.

HIP 74100 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is May: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
