What is HIP 72664
Within the coils of the circumpolar Dragon burns an orange class K star, calmer and cooler than the Sun. Its light slipped free 453 years ago: at that time Philip II was building El Escorial and oceans were crossed by wooden galleons. That orange ember has traveled through entire centuries to reach the northern telescopes now.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 72664 lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is March: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
