What is 20 Boötis
20 Boötis burns amber along the outline of the Herdsman, an orange K-type giant some 187 light-years away. Its light began the journey around 1839, when photography was being invented and the world was learning to fix reality on silver plates. You will find it on the back of the celestial shepherd, far from the orange blaze of Arcturus, beating with that golden light only aged stars carry.
Where it is and when to see it
20 Boötis lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is April: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
