What is Omega Boötis

Omega Boötis is an orange star at 372 light-years, hanging in the Herdsman's cloak just north of bright Arcturus. Its warm tint comes from a comparatively cool surface: a giant in full maturity, long past the blue-white glow of its youth. When its light first set out toward us across interstellar space, Philip II still ruled a Spanish empire on which the sun was famously said to never set.

Omega Boötis lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is April, when it culminates around midnight.

From London it culminates about 64° above the horizon.
From New York it culminates about 74° above the horizon.
From Sydney it culminates about 31° above the horizon.

It can be seen from anywhere north of 65° S.

It ranks no. 23 in brightness among the 88 stars of Boötes in our catalogue. To find it, start from Arcturus, the brightest: it lies about 12° away (a fist at arm's length covers about 10°).
