Omega Boötis
What is Omega Boötis
Omega Boötis is an orange star at 372 light-years, hanging in the Herdsman's cloak just north of bright Arcturus. Its warm tint comes from a comparatively cool surface: a giant in full maturity, long past the blue-white glow of its youth. When its light first set out toward us across interstellar space, Philip II still ruled a Spanish empire on which the sun was famously said to never set.
Where it is and when to see it
Omega Boötis lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is April: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
