What is Syrma
Syrma shines 72.5 light-years away in Virgo, a class-F star barely hotter than the Sun and slightly more yellow than white. Its name comes from the Greek «syrma», the train of a robe, alluding to the fold of the maiden's mantle dragging across the sky's floor. A discreet star but heavy with literature: it appears in many ancient catalogues precisely because it served as a secondary marker beside the far more spectacular Spica.
Where it is and when to see it
Syrma lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is April: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
