What is Syrma

Syrma shines 72.5 light-years away in Virgo, a class-F star barely hotter than the Sun and slightly more yellow than white. Its name comes from the Greek «syrma», the train of a robe, alluding to the fold of the maiden's mantle dragging across the sky's floor. A discreet star but heavy with literature: it appears in many ancient catalogues precisely because it served as a secondary marker beside the far more spectacular Spica.

Where it is and when to see it

Syrma lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is April, when it culminates around midnight.

From London it culminates about 32° above the horizon.
From New York it culminates about 43° above the horizon.
From Sydney it culminates about 62° above the horizon.

It can be seen from anywhere south of 84° N.

It ranks no. 12 in brightness among the 99 stars of Virgo in our catalogue. To find it, start from Spica, the brightest: it lies about 14° away (a fist at arm's length covers about 10°).
