What is Upsilon Boötis
υ Boötis is an orange giant burning in the Herdsman, the ancient figure who drives the Bears around the pole. Its amber tone reveals a star in an advanced phase, swollen after exhausting the hydrogen in its core. It glows discreetly alongside the great luminaries of the constellation, like a slow ember on the herdsman's staff.
Where it is and when to see it
Upsilon Boötis lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is April: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
