Theta Boötis is a striking neighbour at 47 light-years, a yellow-white F-type star tucked into the Herdsman's cloak. A little hotter and more luminous than the Sun, it sits in that band of stars whose chemistry feels familiar enough to imagine possible planets. Every spring night we see it hanging near the tail of the Great Bear, almost within reach.
Where it is and when to see it
Theta Boötis lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is March: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
