HIP 64390
What is HIP 64390
Its yellow-white light left Musca some 137 years ago, when Hertz was demonstrating in the laboratory the electromagnetic waves predicted by Maxwell. It is an F-type star, slightly hotter and more luminous than the Sun, white with a barely golden tint. Musca is the only constellation named after an insect, perched south of the Cross as if circling the southern pole.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 64390 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is May: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
