What is Theta Virginis
Theta Virginis shines from Virgo at 316 light-years, in a sky region where the galaxies of the Virgo Cluster crowd in as a cosmological backdrop. A white A-type star, it is a multiple system whose components have been resolved through both interferometry and visual observation. The light we see today set out when, in Europe, the very first telescopes were being tried.
Where it is and when to see it
Theta Virginis lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is April: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
