In Centaurus, neighbour of the southern heart of the sky, shines a blue class B star some 555 light-years away. Its light set out around 1471, when Botticelli was painting in Florence and the printing press was beginning to multiply books across Europe. Hot, young and cool-toned to the eye, it recalls that many deep-sky beacons live brief and brilliant lives compared with the long existences of yellow stars like our Sun.

HIP 64033 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is May: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
