Hot blue starIts story
The Southern Cross hosts a blue class B star whose light took 762 years to reach us. When it left, European courts were witnessing the rise of the first stable universities and Atlantic sailors were starting to use the compass routinely. Its blue-white hue betrays a very hot surface, able to ionize the surrounding gas. It is one of the bright young stars adorning the small but iconic southern constellation.
