Omicron Hydrae is a hot blue B-type star buried in the winding body of Hydra, the largest constellation in the sky. About 449 light-years away, it shines with the concentrated energy of an atmosphere far hotter than the Sun’s, lost among the coils of the greatest of celestial serpents. Hydra spans so much sky that it takes almost seven hours to cross the meridian end to end: throughout that long passage, Omicron rises and sets like a slow blue heartbeat along the monster’s body.
Where it is and when to see it
Omicron Hydrae lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is April: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
