What is HIP 42835

Some 769 light-years away, amid the meanders of Hydra, shines a yellow star whose light set out when the Crusaders were losing Acre and the Mediterranean was changing hands. Spectral class G like the Sun, its golden hue comes from a surface temperature near 5,500 K. The distance, however, reveals it as far larger and more luminous than our star —an aged giant traversing the last stable chapters before transforming into something else.

Where it is and when to see it

HIP 42835 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is February: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
