What is 34 Ceti
34 Ceti is an orange giant five hundred and sixty light-years away, in the vast Whale —the largest of the classical constellations after Hydra and Virgo. Its K type marks an atmosphere cooled by age and a deep glow, like an ember that lingers after night. The light we see now left the star when the printing press was just beginning to spread star maps across Europe.
Where it is and when to see it
34 Ceti lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is October, when it culminates around midnight.

- From Sydney it culminates about 58° above the horizon.
It can be seen from anywhere south of 88° N.
