What is Omega Ursae Majoris
ω Ursae Majoris sits within the Great Bear, away from the seven stars of the Plough. It is a spectroscopic binary system 246 light-years away, with a chemically peculiar A1 V spectrum: it carries an excess of silicon in its atmosphere, one of those curious signatures of Ap stars that magnetic models still strive to fully explain.
Where it is and when to see it
Omega Ursae Majoris lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is February: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
