Variable starIts story
83 Ursae Majoris is an M-type variable red giant some 524 light-years away, on the eastern edge of the Great Bear. Its cool atmosphere pulses slowly, modulating its brightness near magnitude 4.63 —a stellar breath that escapes the casual eye. From temperate latitudes it beats softly close to the handle of the Plough, where so many gazes seek the familiar outline of the seven bright stars.
