Hot blue starIts story
Along Hydra, the water serpent stretched across much of the sky, shines a blue B-type star 523 light-years away. Its white-blue light, far hotter than the Sun's, set out as Vasco da Gama landed in Calicut and opened the sea route to India. Faint to the unaided eye yet fierce and young, it marks one of the longest coils in the firmament.
