What is HIP 50336
In zodiacal Leo, a clear-cut figure of the spring sky, kindles an orange K-type giant at 355 light-years. Its coppery light set out around 1671, when Cassini was observing Saturn's rings in detail from Paris and Europe was entering the age of the telescope. Cooler than the Sun yet noticeably larger, it glows with the autumnal amber of evolved stars.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 50336 lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is February: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
