What is HIP 50191
A white A-type light pulses in Vela at just over a hundred light years —a distance whose photons left during the jazz age and the first transatlantic flights. Modest to the naked eye, it hides an atmosphere far hotter than the Sun's. It shines in a southern region threaded by the debris of ancient stellar explosions, a dense neighbourhood of fossil light.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 50191 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is March: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
