A calm orange spark tucked into the southern reach of Vela, this K giant pours its light from roughly three hundred light-years away. The photon entering the pupil tonight set out when Isaac Newton was publishing the «Principia» and Europe was learning to read gravity as a cosmic affair. Late for the appointment, but here.

HIP 44511 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is March: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight.
