A calm orange spark tucked into the southern reach of Vela, this K giant pours its light from roughly three hundred light-years away. The photon entering the pupil tonight set out when Isaac Newton was publishing the «Principia» and Europe was learning to read gravity as a cosmic affair. Late for the appointment, but here.

HIP 44511 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is March, when it culminates around midnight.

It can be seen from anywhere south of 43° N.
It ranks no. 10 in brightness among the 127 stars of Vela in our catalogue. To find it, start from Gamma 2 Velorum, the brightest: it lies about 9° away (a fist at arm's length covers about 10°).
