What is Lambda Pyxidis
Lambda Pyxidis is a yellow giant with twice the Sun's mass and a radius swollen at the pace of an aging star, set within the sailor's small Compass at 192 light-years. Pyxis is one of the sky's youngest constellations —Lacaille drew it in the 18th century to honour navigation—, and Lambda is one of its naked-eye anchor points.
Where it is and when to see it
Lambda Pyxidis lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is February: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
