Nameless in Vela, this very hot blue star has been pouring its light through the cosmos for 612 years. It set off when, in 1414, the Council of Constance was opening to reunify Christendom. A massive B-type, with a surface temperature several times that of the Sun, it lives fast and will burn out in a fraction of the Sun's lifetime. One of those austral blue beacons that seems to scorch the surrounding air.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 45344 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is March: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
