What is Epsilon Pyxidis
Epsilon Pyxidis shines in the small Compass constellation, a fragment broken from the ancient Argo Navis —the ship of the Greek Argonauts. It is a white A-type star some 212 light-years away, hotter and younger than the Sun. Its discreet light is part of the celestial instrument that Lacaille set upon the ship's deck to guide navigation through the southern stars.
Where it is and when to see it
Epsilon Pyxidis lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is February: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
