What is Sigma 1 Cancri
σ¹ Cancri is a white star in the Crab, one of several σ stars sharing the Bayer label in this zodiacal constellation. Its A type indicates a hot, young star with clean light. Cancer is a discreet constellation, without great luminaries, yet it harbours the Beehive and King clusters —two of the oldest open star groups catalogued by astronomy.
Where it is and when to see it
Sigma 1 Cancri lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is January: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
