What is 15 Hydrae
15 Hydrae inhabits the largest of the constellations, the Hydra, that celestial serpent whose body winds across more than a hundred degrees of sky. It is a white type-A star about 446 light-years away, with a surface near ten thousand degrees. The light leaving its atmosphere and reaching Earth set out around the signing of the first colonial treaties of the sixteenth century.
Where it is and when to see it
15 Hydrae lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is February: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
