What is HIP 40793

In Camelopardalis, the modest northern giraffe, shines a yellow G-type star, a distant sister of the Sun yet far more luminous. Its light took some 280 years to reach us: it set out around 1745, when Bach was composing his final works and Europe was deep in the Age of Enlightenment. It is a golden solar echo crossing a forgotten corner of the northern sky.

HIP 40793 lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is January, when it culminates around midnight.

From London it never sets and culminates about 66° up.
From New York it never sets and culminates about 55° up.
From Sydney it never rises above the horizon.

It can be seen from anywhere north of 14° S.
