Variable starIts story
28 Monocerotis is an orange K4 giant, also designated V645 Monocerotis as a variable, and tagged as a high-proper-motion star moving briskly across the sky. Its warm glow crosses the celestial Unicorn at apparent magnitude 4.69, just enough to catch with the naked eye under dark skies. The 450 light-years between us amount to the time since Galileo first turned a telescope skyward.
