What is HIP 38375
It belongs to Puppis and burns with the orange flush of K-class stars already advanced in their combustion. Its light set out some 306 years ago, when Philip V was consolidating the Bourbon monarchy in Spain and the Treaties of Utrecht had just redrawn the map of Europe. It is a swollen giant, dozens of times wider than the Sun, and its warm tone contrasts with the blue of many neighbours in the same constellation. It shines with the deep calm of stars that have already walked most of their road.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 38375 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is January: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
