What is HIP 36399
On the horn of the celestial Unicorn shines a yellow-white type-F star, somewhat hotter and more luminous than the Sun. It is relatively close by stellar standards: barely 89 light-years. Its light set out in the heart of the 1930s, when Edwin Hubble was confirming that the universe was expanding and cosmology changed forever. It arrived in time to light the grandchildren of those who sent it off without knowing.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 36399 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is January: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
