What is HIP 34358

Gemini are the twins Castor and Pollux, the two bright stars that give the sign its name. Far from them, within the body of the constellation, lives this orange giant six hundred and fifty-six light-years away. Its light set out around 1369, when Tamerlane was beginning his conquest campaigns in Central Asia. K-type, the colour of a fire going out, brightness barely enough to be perceived without instruments.

Where it is and when to see it

HIP 34358 lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is January: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
