44 Geminorum is a hot blue B-type star kindled some 401 light-years away, on the eastern flank of the Twins. Its surface reaches temperatures far higher than the Sun's and pours out the clean, near blue-violet light that marks massive young stars. The light reaching telescopes tonight set out around the seventeenth century —the years the first systematic catalogues were beginning to fix the sky onto paper.
Where it is and when to see it
44 Geminorum lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is January: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
