It inhabits the keel of Carina, a fragment of the ancient ship Argo broken up by eighteenth-century astronomers. A K-type star with an orange tone and, moreover, a variable: its brightness shifts with an inner pulse. Its light took some six centuries to arrive: it set out when the Black Death was sweeping through Europe and Boccaccio was writing the Decameron. On that keel laden with mythological heroes, it holds a lateral but firm position.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 32531 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is January: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
