In the southern Dove pulses a blue star whose light crossed eleven hundred and forty-four years of space before arriving. It set out while Europe was still in the High Middle Ages and the first universities were opening their doors in Bologna and Paris. It is a young, vehement sun, far hotter than our own, with that blue-white surface only massive stars possess. Modest to the unaided eye, it keeps alive the promise of a sky still telling old stories in light.

HIP 31637 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is January: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
