Its light spent nearly thirteen hundred and sixty-five years crossing the void —it set out when the Visigoth kingdoms were crumbling in Iberia and monks copied manuscripts by candlelight. A B-type star, far hotter and more violent than the Sun, it is a blue forge living fast within a constellation named for the keel of a ship.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 31407 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is January: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
