What is Delta Columbae

Delta Columbae shines within the small constellation of the Dove, drawn south of Lepus by Petrus Plancius to evoke the bird Noah sent out from the ark. At 234 light-years, this yellow G-type giant is a sun already entered into old age, several times more luminous than our own, whose warm light crosses a region near the stellar trail left by the southern Milky Way.

Delta Columbae lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is December, when it culminates around midnight.

From London it culminates about 5° above the horizon.
From New York it culminates about 16° above the horizon.
From Sydney it culminates about 90° above the horizon.

It can be seen from anywhere south of 57° N.
