Lambda Columbae is a blue variable B-type star, set 335 light-years away within the constellation of the Dove. Its brightness does not stay still: it shifts subtly, born of inner pulsations or of the atmospheric processes typical of hot stars. Its bluish light flickers among the wings of a young, southern celestial bird, drawn by Renaissance cartographers over the freshly charted southern skies.
Where it is and when to see it
Lambda Columbae lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is December: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
