Blue-white and hot in the small Columba, 1,019 light years away. The light reaching the southern European observer tonight set off around the year 1006, just as Chinese and Arab astronomers were recording supernova SN 1006, the brightest ever documented in history. Its B class places it among the young and energetic: a distant ember whose journey has lasted a thousand years.

HIP 28992 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is December: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight.
