What is HIP 28484
In Pictor, that modern constellation created to honour the painter's easel, shines an A-type white star. Its light set out two hundred and twelve years ago, in the heart of the Napoleonic era, when Goya was painting the disasters of war and Beethoven was dictating symphonies over Europe. Hotter and more luminous than the Sun, it sheds a cool, almost mineral white glow. It is a serene point in a small, quiet southern figure, like a white brushstroke left on purpose across an almost empty nocturnal canvas.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 28484 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is December: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
