What is HIP 28139

Also in Orion, but this time an orange K-type giant at 309 light-years. Its light set off when Linnaeus was publishing the «Systema Naturae» and humankind was beginning to order life into categories. The star, indifferent to all taxonomy, remains what it is: a photon crossing the void in search of an eye.

Where it is and when to see it

HIP 28139 lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is December: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
