32 Orionis is a blue-white luminary catalogued by Flamsteed near the Hunter's feet, beyond the lower edge of the Belt asterism. Its B-class spectrum and magnitude 4.2 hint at a surface far hotter than the Sun, pouring ultraviolet light onto neighbouring interstellar clouds. The photons reaching us tonight set out from its atmosphere roughly three centuries ago, long before astronomical photography existed.
Where it is and when to see it
32 Orionis lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is December: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
