Phi-1 Orionis is a blue B-type star more than a thousand light-years away, set in the head of the Hunter. It belongs to the dynamic Orion OB1 complex, a fertile region of young suns and bright nebulae that gave birth to many of the stars sketching out winter's most recognisable silhouette. Its raw, hot light travelled for a millennium before reaching human eyes.
Where it is and when to see it
Phi 1 Orionis lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is December: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
