In the celestial Giraffe of Camelopardalis burns an old red giant, cool on the surface yet enormous in size, capable of swallowing entire orbits of the inner solar system. Its reddish light set out more than four centuries ago, in the days when Galileo first pointed his spyglass at the Moon and found mountains where a perfect disk had been imagined. That same light, slow and warm, arrives today like an ancient ember to a sky that keeps watching it without quite understanding.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 20376 lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is December, when it culminates around midnight.

- From New York it never sets and culminates about 70° up.
- From Sydney it never rises above the horizon.
It can be seen from anywhere north of 29° S.
It ranks no. 39 in brightness among the 75 stars of Camelopardalis in our catalogue. To find it, start from Beta Camelopardalis, the brightest: it lies about 5° away (a fist at arm's length covers about 10°).
